I love bringing variety to our Sunday morning corporate worship times. Normally we use a full band and singers but from time to time we will try something different. We have used a brass ensemble for that “Chicago” style sound….we have gone completely acapella…this weekend we be using acoustic guitars and I will dust off the old Cajon. This is an amazing instrument. It is like having a full kit in a box which is what the word “cajon” actually means…box.
In essence the cajon is nothing more than a box that was designed to make percussive sounds. Yeah deep I know…go figure. It has an amazing sound though. It is hollow with a port hole in the back. This gives it the
very low bass drum sounds when hitting the middle. On the front is a very thin sheet of laminate…different types of wood are used for different sounds. The laminate on the inside can contain a variety of items like guitar strings, beads, ball bearings etc to mimic snare, shekre and other sounds. It takes a lot of experimenting but is a blast discovering new areas that sound different when struck and other places that boom and sizzle and so on. Check out one of the best cajon players doin’ his thing
